2009 Disaster Management Course Schedule

In partnership with the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT), The Litaker Group announces its 2009 course schedule.  In total, five courses will be taught in 2009 at the Abu Dhabi Men's College (HCT) during the dates listed below.  Breakfast, lunch, and all course materials will be provided.

Introduction to Disaster Management
A concise course to introduce students to specific concepts in disaster management and emergency planning, including mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.

June 2, 3, and 4, 2009
Planning Workshop
This workshop will work through the planning elements associated with creating a disaster plan for their organization, using an all-hazards plans approach.  By the end of this workshop, participants will have practical experience in completing a disaster plan for their organization that includes the following:
  • Base plan
  • Functional annex(es)
  • Hazard specific appendix(ces)

Public Education and Crisis CommunicationThis three day course on public education, crisis communication, and spokesperson training will emphasize didactic and practice sessions (e.g., interviews, press conferences, etc.).  It will also discuss:
  • Public education activities before a disaster
  • Crisis communication during an incident (i.e., providing accurate, coherent information to the public in a timely manner so action can be taken to protect lives and property)
  • Addressing the public and media during an incident (e.g., interviews, press conferences, etc.)

Post-Traumatic Stress and Critical Incident Stress Management This course will focus on topics related to post-traumatic stress due to a disaster, establishing a family assistance center, addressing the physical and mental health needs of victims, and critical incident stress management for responders.

Fundamentals of Conducting an ExerciseThis course will provide classroom instruction and hands on application to demonstrate the types of exercises available and their value to an organization.  Participants will learn the fundamentals of exercise development, evaluation, and conduct.  They will be able to recognize different exercise types and appropriate application of each type.  Participants will be divided into two groups.  Throughout the course, each group will create a tabletop exercise for conduct on day 3.  On day 3, two tabletop exercises will be conducted, each led by members of the design and development groups.
